Charlotte is a fictional character appearing in the 2003 film Lost in Translation, from which she serves as the protagonist. She is portrayed by Scarlett Johansson.
Biography[]
She is a seventeen-year-old girl is desperately trying to understand the world around her, and to be understood by the world around her. She visited Tokyo with her husband John, who is there for a photo shoot with a band.
Despite her friend telling her that she is fortunate to have so much freedom, Charlotte feels unhappy and isolated in Tokyo. She is staying in the luxurious but lifeless Park Hyatt Hotel, and has no job or friends in the city. Additionally, she is unable to communicate with the people around her as they do not speak the same language.
Charlotte is trying to figure out her purpose in life while her husband is away working. To pass the time, she listens to a self-help audiobook called "A Soul's Search: Finding Your True Calling." Charlotte is experiencing a sort of crisis in her mid-twenties, and she connects with Bob, who is going through his own mid-life crisis. Despite his many years of life experience, he is just as uncertain as Charlotte about how to cope with their sense of dissatisfaction.

Charlotte has been married to John for two years, but their relationship has become strained due to John's busy work schedule, which leaves little time for Charlotte. As a result, Charlotte feels as though she doesn't know her husband anymore and turns to Bob Harris, a middle-aged actor, for comfort. Despite their different backgrounds, the two bond over their shared sense of boredom and difficulty sleeping.

Charlotte is an intelligent, curious individual with a dry sense of humor. Despite her many blessings, she struggles with feelings of uncertainty and fear that she will make the wrong decisions and waste her life. Her sense of isolation has dampened her fun-loving personality, but she is still capable of occasional acts of spontaneous wildness.
