The Japanese have been making films for more than a century. In 2009, the Japanese film market was considered fourth largest in the world. The 1950s are known as the golden age of Japanese cinema. The 1950s gave birth to films like Floating Weeds Late Spring, Rashomon, Seven Samurai, Godzilla and Tokyo Story, which are still considered some of Japan's best films.

Recent Japanese films include Caterpillar, Silver Bear and Outrage.
